    Retired colonels maintain old connections, pursue new dreams

    On a beautiful Monday morning, when most people were just arriving at the office, three retired colonels came together ready to spend the day outside. Retired Col. Ronald Light, former commander of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Middle East District, and owner of Lighthouse Woodworking, has been building furniture since 1995. The two-story, three-car garage at his family’s home in Boyce, Va., is his woodworking workshop and furniture showroom.

    Formal partnering creates team atmosphere

    Trying to conduct business through email can often lead to misunderstandings and working across cultural barriers can complicate matters further, even when participants have a common goal. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Middle East District, has a solution to ease this difficulty. During the recent Maritime Traffic Coordination Center post-award conference, which took place March 15-17 in Kuwait, the team dedicated one morning to a formal partnering session.

    Student shadows District engineers, determines his future path

    The Middle East District and Frederick County Public Schools collaborated on shadowing sessions so a local student could explore engineering careers. The program fits perfectly with the USACE commitment of teaming with others to strengthen programs that inspire young people to pursue careers in science, technology, engineering and mathematics fields.

    The recently completed shadowing experience was reportedly a success from all perspectives. Middle East District engineers and architects shared time with a local high school student in one-hour increments throughout February, March, April and May. Most of the engineers and architects who spent time with the student seemed to appreciate the experience.
