At the time , 00:31.020 --> 00:33.131 I didn't know it was STEM . It wasn't 00:33.131 --> 00:35.353 called STEM . It was just a kid playing 00:35.353 --> 00:37.298 in a sandbox . And when I realized 00:37.298 --> 00:40.319 after talking to some . Mentors and 00:40.319 --> 00:42.520 some teachers , uh , as I was going 00:42.520 --> 00:44.576 through high school , they're like , 00:44.576 --> 00:46.742 you'd be a really good engineer . Uh , 00:46.742 --> 00:48.964 what you're doing and , you know , what 00:48.964 --> 00:51.076 you'd have aptitude in with the maths 00:51.076 --> 00:52.687 and sciences , you know , is 00:52.687 --> 00:54.979 engineering and as I looked deeper into 00:55.520 --> 00:57.687 the different courses of engineering , 00:57.687 --> 00:59.409 civil engineering , mechanical 00:59.409 --> 01:01.576 engineering , you know , what they may 01:01.576 --> 01:03.409 be , I realized . Uh , 01:10.080 --> 01:12.191 what I was looking at , uh , as I was 01:12.191 --> 01:14.302 going through high school and looking 01:14.302 --> 01:16.419 for colleges were those colleges that 01:16.419 --> 01:19.339 had a good engineering program . I knew 01:19.339 --> 01:22.099 I wanted to be a civil engineer . I 01:22.099 --> 01:24.043 knew I wanted to do something with 01:24.220 --> 01:25.998 transportation , something with 01:25.998 --> 01:28.260 vertical construction . Um , it may 01:28.260 --> 01:30.482 have been not as clearly articulated at 01:30.482 --> 01:32.538 the time in high school , but when I 01:32.538 --> 01:34.704 knew what I wanted to do was build and 01:34.704 --> 01:36.593 create . And so I was looking for 01:36.593 --> 01:38.860 colleges that did that . Um , it's just 01:39.220 --> 01:41.819 by happenstance , uh , that I was able 01:41.819 --> 01:44.379 to be recruited to the military academy 01:44.379 --> 01:46.660 at West Point that had a phenomenal 01:46.660 --> 01:48.438 civil engineering program , and 01:48.438 --> 01:51.330 thankfully they accepted me . My formal 01:51.330 --> 01:53.620 education is very relevant to what it 01:53.620 --> 01:56.360 is I do today as the district engineer 01:56.360 --> 01:58.220 and commander , uh , I have the 01:58.220 --> 02:00.510 responsibility to , you know , do 02:00.510 --> 02:04.419 reviews of not only , uh , designs 02:04.419 --> 02:06.419 and plans for the buildings that we 02:06.419 --> 02:08.308 build , but also to go out on the 02:08.308 --> 02:11.460 construction . Sites and using my 02:11.460 --> 02:14.300 background in civil engineering and now 02:14.300 --> 02:16.380 geological engineering , I can walk 02:16.380 --> 02:19.440 onto a construction site and look at 02:19.440 --> 02:21.779 steel being erected , look at 02:21.779 --> 02:23.835 electrical lines being run , look at 02:23.835 --> 02:25.940 plumbing and know what Wright looks 02:25.940 --> 02:28.051 like .
