Combating STEM shortage one student at a time

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Middle East District’s high school internship program is helping inspire the next generation of STEM professionals by mentoring local students in engineering and architecture. Throughout the semester, students gained hands-on experience designing a nature center while exploring future careers in STEM fields.

U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Consolidates Mission in Middle East, Expeditionary District Stands Down

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers held an inactivation ceremony May 21 as the Expeditionary District stood down and the Middle East District assumed its responsibilities, consolidating engineering and construction support across the U.S. Central Command area of responsibility under a single district. Leaders highlighted the Expeditionary District’s critical support to Operations Inherent Resolve and Spartan Shield, while emphasizing the Middle East District’s longstanding presence and continued commitment to supporting the warfighter throughout the region.

Alaa Jafar, a USACE Project Engineer who overcame war and displacement in Iraq, immigrated to the United States to build a successful career in engineering through perseverance and education. Today, she draws on her profound resilience to support critical missions in the Middle East District, embodying a journey from refugee to dedicated public servant.
